Arriving at work, passing through the turnstile, sitting down at the desk, and starting the day is routine for thousands of people. For those who used the WeWork Girassol location, however, that routine has changed in recent weeks.
The coworking company has made a decision that will alter the workspace of around 150 people, dedicating it exclusively to a single company. Market sources report that the ride-hailing app 99 will take over the space in question, expanding its operations, though the information has not been officially confirmed. According to accounts, WeWork canceled existing reservations and notified the affected users directly.
99 reached out to REsource to deny the claims. The company is currently based in a WeWork location on Avenida Paulista, in the Comolatti building.
The US-based multinational’s business model ranges from one-off meeting room rentals to the leasing of entire floors or buildings, in a sublease format.
At WeWork Girassol 555, the operation initially occupied three blocks — A, B, and C. However, Block C was shut down following the company’s recent crisis. Today, one of the blocks is fully leased by QuintoAndar, while another had been hosting companies and independent professionals. Sources say that, technically, no user was directly impacted, as none had an exclusive contract for the spaces in question.
Even so, the change was not well-received by all tenants. Parties involved, interviewed by REsource, reported dissatisfaction among occupants. Some have even moved to competitor Regus, which has been absorbing part of this demand.
As of the time this report was published, WeWork had not commented on the matter.
Between 2023 and 2024, WeWork faced a crisis that shook its global operations, leading to management changes and legal disputes, including eviction lawsuits.
In São Paulo, the company closed several units, including Block C of Girassol 555, Vita Cora, and Centenario.
According to data from the Market Analytics platform, since 2023 WeWork has returned 35,400 sqm in the city, making it the company with the largest reduction in occupied space during this period.
So far in 2025, the company has already vacated 24,000 sqm of São Paulo offices. In the first quarter, this included 16,400 sqm at Centenário in Berrini; a small space at Eco 336; 5,500 sqm at Metrô Office II in Pinheiros; and 1,000 sqm at Market Place – Tower I.
In the second quarter, it also vacated part of Plaza Centenário, again in Berrini.
