With indicators pointing out that global e-commerce will grow by more than 50% by 2025, Amazon, one of the industry leaders, has been innovating to ensure this growth is in its favour. With that in mind, the retailer announced its "first fully autonomous mobile robot" designed to move large loads at the company's US distribution centres earlier this week.

The robot, called Proteus, can safely navigate around human employees, unlike other models already widely used by the company that requires a confined workspace away from people.

According to the company, Proteus is a maxim in "safety technology at work, perception and robotic navigation". To demonstrate this power, the company founded by Jeff Bezos released a video of the machine performing some tasks, possibly using a green laser to locate itself spatially and to stop its activities when a human crosses the path.

The company also announced other robotic systems. One, called Cardinal, is a robotic arm that can lift and move packages weighing up to 22kg, which Amazon hopes to deploy in warehouses next year.
