One of the world's leading social networks, X (formerly Twitter), is shutting down its São Paulo office. Exclusive information from Market Analytics monitoring reveals that the company, owned by controversial entrepreneur Elon Musk, has recently returned the keys to the 9th floor of Praça Faria Lima, a Class A+ development on Faria Lima Avenue.
This
decision was confirmed aimed heated
discussions between Musk and Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF in Portuguese), Alexandre de Moraes, with Musk even threatening to close the
office in Brazil in response to a follower.
"We are lifting all restrictions. This judge has applied massive fines,
threatened to arrest our employees and cut off access to 𝕏 in Brazil. As a result, we will
probably lose all revenue in Brazil and have to shut down our office there. But
principles matter more than profit," he posted.
Musk's statement was made last Saturday (6th), however, the termination of the social media network's lease contract was confirmed by the SiiLA team in Januery, tree months preceding the disputes.
The new physical location of X in Brazil remains officially undisclosed if there´s any, yet professionals within the industry suggest that the social network may be relocating to a coworking space. The REsource team was unable to establish contact with Musk's company in Brazil to verify the destination.
On Saturday, the Global Government Affairs profile, an official X profile dedicated to general political matters, posted that "X Corp. was forced by court decisions to block certain popular accounts in Brazil."
The request, which until then had no disclosed issuer, stated that the blocked profiles violated the Marco Civil da Internet (Internet Civil Rights Framework) and the Federal Constitution. If the orders were not complied with, the social network would be punished with daily fines.
After the post, Musk, who owns the social network, soon revealed that it was Minister of the STF, Alexandre de Moraes, who requested the account blockings. The publication was the first of many that stirred the social network worldwide.
The subject took over the trending topics (term used to rank the most discussed topics worldwide on the social network) and made headlines in various newspapers and websites around the world.
Since Musk took over the company in April 2022, mass layoffs have occurred worldwide. At the time, the number reached 50% of the company's global workforce. Brazil was not exempt, and this was reflected in its occupancy.
"We recognize that a certain number of people who have made significant contributions to Twitter will be affected, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company's success in the future," was stated in an internal memo from the company to global employees.
Market Analytics data shows that before Musk took over the company, in the first quarter of 2022, the social network had already vacated the 10th floor at Praça Faria Lima. With the billionaire already in command, in the third quarter of 2023, the social network stopped occupying the 8th floor, and by 2024, X had permanently left Praça Faria Lima, vacating the 9th floor.
