Iguatemi S.A., one of Brazil's major full-service shopping center companies, is dedicated to enhancing its sustainability efforts. The company recently launched its inaugural Sustainability Report, highlighting its major actions and reaffirming its commitment to the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) agenda.
To provide context for Iguatemi's impact, the group has holdings in 14 shopping centers, two premium outlets, and four commercial towers. One of them, Sky Galleria, reached full occupancy before its first year of delivery. According to the group, the Sky Galleria project exemplifies the company's commitment to green building concepts.
Located in Campinas (SP), the asset achieved LEED Gold certification due to its compliance with sustainability attributes related to energy efficiency, rational water use, materials, resources, among other requirements.
On the environmental front, notable initiatives include dual solid waste sorting, resulting in the redirection of 18,000 tons of waste for recycling over six years; procuring 100% of energy from renewable sources, specifically small hydroelectric power plants (PCHs); and the replacement of approximately 60,000 conventional light bulbs with LEDs in the company's developments, generating a 70% reduction in lighting load.
Regarding inclusion and diversity, the group emphasizes that nearly half of its employees are women, with women occupying 50% of top leadership positions. Additionally, Iguatemi has endorsed the UN Women's Empowerment Principles and is part of the "Elas Lideram 2030" movement, committing to gender representation targets.
Since 2020, the company has participated in the Empoderando Refugiadas (Empowering Refugees) program developed by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. The initiative focuses on the employability of refugee women, with participating companies providing training to help these women gain formal employment in the Brazilian job market.
Regarding governance, the group highlights the change in internal management resulting from the corporate restructuring, involving the incorporation of the company's shares by its controlling entity, Grupo Jereissati. This move, according to the group, paved the way for a healthy growth phase by establishing four statutory committees (Finance and Capital Allocation; People, Culture, and ESG; Risk and Compliance), adding even more transparency to the company's structure.
"We want to be a catalyst for change, working collaboratively with all links in our ecosystem to pursue transformative initiatives. Our goal is to develop processes, products, and services that are increasingly sustainable from both environmental and social perspectives, with governance and transparency that allow us to evolve, creating value for society as a whole and providing ongoing opportunities for innovation and engagement with ESG in our company and ecosystem," said Vivian Broge, HR and ESG Director at Iguatemi S.A.
Cristina Betts, CEO of Iguatemi S.A., stressed that the report reflects the company's ongoing commitment to fostering open dialogue with its stakeholders: "This material underscores our dedication to continually engage in an open dialogue with the various players in our ecosystem. Through it, we present our initiatives aimed at mitigating the impacts associated with our business and, in turn, amplifying the positive influence we exert on the environment and society."
For the group, this report represents a milestone in the company's ESG journey and a governance leap following the corporate restructuring that occurred in recent years. The initiatives are anchored in three key areas: environmental management and sustainable growth, inclusion and diversity, and ethics and sustainability within its value chain.
