In the new episode of the NXT Podcast, psychiatrist Vanessa Favaro discussed one of the most pressing issues of modern life: mental exhaustion caused by excessive stimuli, decisions and constant demands.
According to the specialist, the problem does not lie only in major responsibilities, but also in the accumulation of small decisions throughout the day. The need to switch between different tasks, respond to messages, handle commitments and manage one’s own routine continuously consumes mental energy.
“Switching between different tasks requires mental energy. Making decisions throughout the day also comes at a cost. When all of this accumulates, the result is a level of exhaustion that we often do not even notice,” Vanessa explained.
Activities such as reading, walking, meditation and spending time in nature remain important tools for restoring mental balance.
“The human brain was not prepared to receive stimuli all the time. We need pauses, idle time and moments of presence,” she noted.
The episode also addressed the impacts of technology on human attention. With social media, notifications and increasingly personalized content, maintaining deep focus has become more difficult. According to Vanessa, attention has become a resource disputed by digital platforms that compete daily for people’s time.
The conversation also explored topics such as anxiety, ADHD, overdiagnosis and the impact of social media on identity formation. According to the specialist, many people have begun to associate their personal value with professional performance or with the image they project in the digital environment.
“There are people who identify so strongly with their work that any professional problem starts to be seen as a problem of personal worth. It is as if their identity were completely tied to what they produce,” she observed.
