Nessim Safarti joined the NXT Podcast in this week’s new episode for a conversation led by Giancarlo Nicastro, bringing the perspective of someone with deep experience in the Brazilian real estate market. Looking back on the lessons learned throughout his career, they discussed what makes a good leader and how to manage teams, focusing on Safarti’s years at Cyrela before he founded his own real estate company, Barzel Properties.
Safarti sees personal development as closely connected to business growth, and believes that leaders need to invest in their employees. He speaks about his former boss, Elie Horn, with admiration for someone who allies ambition with a practical view. “He dreamed about the project, but kept his feet on the ground.”
Cajamar, one of Brazil’s largest logistics regions, reflects this journey. Safarti used the autonomy granted by Cyrela’s leadership to acquire land and develop properties that now rank among the market’s leading assets. The experience showed that when trust is combined with responsibility and technical vision, teams can find the path to success.
There is also no success without the people who build it. Teams are the driving intellectual and operational force of a company, and a good leader knows not only how to guide them, but also how to structure the people who will move the business forward.
For Safarti, debate is essential to the development of ideas and helps drive results.
“If I was successful at anything, it was in building teams. I never had this idea of ‘there is me, and then there is the team.’ It was always ‘we did this’ and ‘we achieved this.’ There was no hierarchy in my team. People argued with me as well. Being part of my team did not mean that I was in charge of them. The result and the business were in charge,” he said.
A company’s results also need to reach its employees. Safarti emphasizes that ambition is important and that growth is the result of good decisions combined with professionalism.
Although he felt fulfilled by the projects he had developed, the search for new challenges and the desire to pursue his own ideas eventually led him to build his own company.
“Some decisions are yours alone. It is a responsibility that you carry.”
Topics such as transparency and predictability to provide employees with greater security, clear goals and responsibilities, discipline and empathy were also highlighted during the conversation, which presented a broader perspective on life through a corporate lens.
