In the latest episode of the NXT Podcast, Giancarlo Nicastro welcomed Eugênio Mussak, physician, professor at FIA-USP and Fundação Dom Cabral, and one of Brazil’s leading experts in leadership and human development.
During the conversation hosted by Nicastro, Mussak reflected on the challenges of contemporary leadership, the difference between holding a leadership position and truly leading, and the impact of organizational culture on company performance.
According to Mussak, many organizations still promote highly technical professionals into strategic positions without properly preparing them to lead people.
“Leadership is a role that requires specific competencies. An excellent technician does not automatically become a great leader,” he stated.
Throughout the episode, the professor also emphasized that companies have increasingly taken on an important role in human development, influencing behaviors, values, and professional relationships. In his view, leaders must understand people in a holistic way, balancing results, empathy, and responsibility.
Another central topic of the conversation was the pursuit of sustainable high performance. Mussak criticized management models based solely on pressure and excessive targets, advocating for healthier, more productive, and better-prepared work environments.
“High performance is not about pushing people beyond their limits. It’s about increasing their capacity,” he explained.
The interview also covered mental health, corporate culture, autonomy, team development, and the challenges faced by executives in leadership positions.
