Renner, a prominent Brazilian fashion retailer, has taken a significant step toward sustainability by introducing the use of two fully electric vehicles for merchandise distribution across its stores in São Paulo. In its pilot phase, this initiative features a van and an urban cargo vehicle (VUC) provided by a logistics partner. Together, they have the capacity to transport 8.9 tons per trip. These vehicles will initially serve 71 retail outlets in the city of São Paulo, originating from the company's distribution centers (DCs) in the state of São Paulo, where they recharge.
Pedro Pereira, the Director of Supply Chain at Lojas Renner, emphasized the importance of these initiatives: "We aim to be catalysts of change in our sector, which is why we have an expansive and consistent sustainability strategy spanning various facets of our business. Integrating these electric vehicles into our transport network in São Paulo is part of our pursuit of solutions to continually enhance the sustainability of our logistical operations."
In addition to adopting electric vehicles, the Lojas Renner S.A. group is implementing other practices, such as nighttime store replenishment in São Paulo, resulting in a 33% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, they're utilizing solar energy at the Cabreúva distribution center in the São Paulo hinterlands, among other initiatives.
Renner maintains a nationwide presence, with 431 brand stores, 109 Camicado stores, and 115 Youcom stores. Independently, Renner boasts a sales area spanning over 728,000 square meters, as indicated by data from the company's latest financial report for the second quarter of 2023.
Equipped with cutting-edge technologies like regenerative braking, these electric vehicles can cover distances ranging from 300 to 350 kilometers between charges. The projection indicates that these vehicles will cover over 90,000 kilometers annually, making a significant contribution to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Thanks to their electric nature, these vehicles produce zero CO2 emissions, mitigating the release of 40 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere over the designated period.
This retailer's initiative not only underscores the increasing adoption of electric vehicles in Brazil's logistical operations but also highlights the significance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices in the Brazilian corporate sector. Recently, PepsiCo announced a partnership with CHEP Brasil to foster more sustainable logistics.
From the perspective of real estate assets, construction firms, developers, and builders are progressively investing in meeting requisites for properties to attain sustainability certifications. These certifications add value to properties and offer a competitive edge in attracting tenants and investors, be it for office spaces or industrial properties.
