In the economic crisis since 2015, the emptying of downtown Rio was exacerbated by the pandemic and the sudden shift to remote work, which remains. The region currently has a vacancy rate close to 60%. There are almost 7 thousand houses, two-story houses and entire buildings empty, says Claudio Hermolin, president of the State Construction Industry Union (Sinduscon-RJ). The situation triggered the alert in the public authorities, and the City Hall launched, in July 2021, the Reviver Centro, a program to promote residential developments and revitalisation of the area. The project quickly bears fruit by mid-to-long-term construction industry standards.
