At the end of last month, the Chamber signed a term of preference for purchasing the property, valued at R$ 150 million. The acquisition will be made with public money if it comes to fruition. The Chamber intends to include offices, commissions, and administrative sectors in the same building in the project.
According to an investigation by TV Globo, the current Chamber's headquarter, the Pedro Ernesto Palace, has received a series of complaints from the Chamber. There are reports of defects in the electrical and hydraulic installations and the risk of parts of the façade falling, in addition to not having enough space to house the 26 Chamber commissions. Currently, the investment value for the recovery of the property reaches R$ 33 million.
In 2023, the palace will be 100 years old, and if the change occurs, the Chamber expects to hand the property rights back to the city and transform it into a cultural space.
Regarding the possible future new headquarters, the Serrador building is well known in Rio for having been fully leased by Eike Batista in 2011.
