During two weekends and a Brazil's Independence Day holiday, São Paulo attracted around 500,000 people to a "second city" within the famous Interlagos Race Track in the southern zone. The festival "The Town" features 6 stages, with the main one being the Skyline stage, which showcased some of São Paulo's stars: its iconic skyscrapers. These emblematic buildings that define the skyline became the backdrop for the 235 hours of music.
The event is organized by the same creators of Rock in Rio and aims to be one of the world's largest multicultural festivals, just like its Rio de Janeiro counterpart. According to the official website, the expected investment in the construction of the City of Music, including the renovation of the Interlagos Race Track, was set at R$ 300 million (US$ 60 million).
São Paulo in stage
The main stage, Skyline, pays homage to the city of São Paulo and highlights famous landmarks of the capital. You can see the designs of renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, such as COPAN, the Auditorium, and the Oca from Ibirapuera, as well as Ruy Ohtake's Hotel Unique. The iconic Sesc Pompeia building by Lina Bo Bardi and the FIESP building are also honored.
Other classic buildings took center stage at the event, such as São Paulo's first skyscraper, the Martinelli property, the charming Itália, and the modern Tomie Ohtake institute.
Among more contemporary developments, the Plaza Centenário stands out, housing tenants like WeWork, Caixa Econômica Federal, and Rabobank. Popularly known as "Robocop," it has a private area of 38,000 square meters and is located on Nações Unidas avenue.
Another highlight is the Infinity Tower, from Itaim Bibi to The Town's main stage. The tower is the houses of a Brazilian offices for Goldman Sachs, Apple, Credit Suisse, Eletromídia, and Bloomberg. The development boasts a private area of 29,628 square meters and is one of the city's most prominent A+ buildings.
In the heart of the Skyline stage and São Paulo's corporate hub, you can find the Centro Empresarial Nações Unidas or simply CENU. One of the three towers that make up the building is occupied by the Hilton Hotel, and the other two are corporate spaces. Companies like Sephora, Petlove, Outback, and the Brazilian Consulate General of Canada are prominent tenants. The development is part of two real estate investment funds, with the West Tower holding a 25.74% stake in BLMO11 and the North Tower having 100% participation in the TRNT11 fund.
São Paulo Corporate Towers is another standout on the main stage. The two towers, located in the Vila Olímpia neighborhood, house offices for companies like video social network Kwai, Volvo, XP Investimentos, and tech giant Microsoft Brazil. Together, these developments encompass over 100,000 square meters, with a current occupancy of 90.15%.
Beyond the skyscrapers, classical architecture was also honored, this time on the “São Paulo Square” stage. Jazz and the Golden Years of São Paulo's music scene are celebrated here, with re-creations of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Sé, alongside the Municipal Theater, Luz Central Station, and the Pinacoteca Museum.
The São Paulo Municipal Market, popularly known as "Mercadão," was also re-created as the “Market Square”, the gastronomic center of the event. The regions of the old factories found in the neighborhoods of Belém, Barra Funda, and Mooca are referenced on the “Factory” stage, dedicated to hip-hop culture.
Unlike the others, “The One”, a secondary stage featuring various music genres, “New Dance Order”, for electronic music fans, and the “Highway Stage”, paying homage to Rock in Rio, do not reference the city of São Paulo.
The Event
The Town was designed to be São Paulo's largest music festival, occupying 360,000 square meters. According to Mayor Ricardo Nunes, the festival generated 19,000 jobs, with expectations of a R$ 1.7 billion (US$ 341 million) economic impact. Artists such as Bruno Mars, Post Malone, Alok, Foo Fighters, Demi Lovato, Racionais MC's, Seu Jorge, Ne-Yo, and others performed during the five-day event.
