The climate crisis in Rio Grande do Sul has affected more than 2.3 million people, according to the bulletin released by the Rio Grande do Sul Civil Defense. To assist those affected, various organizations are organizing campaigns and actions for the population, such as the UN through UNHCR, which is building temporary shelters, and the Correios (postal service), which is running a nationwide donation and collection campaign.
UNHCR, for example, is collecting financial aid through monthly donations ranging from R$ 64 to R$ 240 or more, as well as one-time donations. The Postal Service is receiving non-perishable goods and using its infrastructure to distribute the collected supplies.
Another example is SETCERGS (Union of Cargo Transport and Logistics Companies in the State of Rio Grande do Sul), which, in addition to its collection campaign, is also partnering with several transport companies and the state government for the transportation and distribution of donations.
"Continuing with the actions, the organization is setting up a Crisis Committee, where each director of SETCERGS will be responsible for a specific area of their region. Transport companies from all regions will register to create an organized route to meet demands, providing transportation and social logistics. The committee, in partnership with the State Government, aims to map the most critical points in Rio Grande do Sul to be effective in transporting donations," SETCERGS told REsource.
In a statement made on May 23, the Correios reported that it had collected about 21,000 tons of donations, with 4,000 tons already delivered to Civil Defense. The remaining 17,000 tons are being released according to the state government's guidelines.
Given its national reach, the postal service is collecting water, food, and hygiene products at all of its units, totaling more than 10,000 branches. The initiative is a joint effort by the state-owned company's Executive Board and the Ministry of Communications.
According to the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM), the tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul has already resulted in R$ 10.4 billion in losses. Of this total, R$ 2.4 billion is from the public sector, R$ 3.4 billion from the private sector, and R$ 4.6 billion from the housing sector.
The state government of Rio Grande do Sul announced an addition of more than R$ 50 million to the Volta por Cima program, totaling R$ 100 million that will be allocated to poor families registered in CadÚnico.
At the federal level, the government is implementing the Auxílio Reconstrução (Reconstruction Aid), a financial support of R$ 5,100 to families whose homes have been fully or partially affected.
According to the official government website (gov.br), a total investment of R$ 62.5 billion has been made so far. Additionally, the state's debts have been suspended by the Federal Government for three years. Moreover, 12 field hospitals have been built, 38,000 professionals mobilized, and 9,100 pieces of equipment made available.
