Sustainability has long become essential in the realm of commercial real estate. Beyond that, ESG considerations have been strongly integrated into the practices and actions of major players in the industry, including development companies and construction firms, driven by the demands of occupiers and investors alike.
In this context, Sweden is about to take a significant step towards sustainability with an ambitious urban project called "Stockholm Wood City". With an investment of over $1 billion, this "city" will be the largest development of its kind worldwide.
The concept of "Stockholm Wood City" is innovative, blending various elements of urban life such as workplaces, residences, restaurants, and shops, all constructed from wood. Remarkably, this project will comprise 7,000 offices and 2,000 residences, occupying a vast area of 250,000 square meters in the southeast of the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The endeavor promises to offer a new standard of sustainable living for occupants, visitors, and residents.
The significance of this project extends far beyond Swedish borders. By recognizing the environmental benefits of wood compared to conventional construction materials, this project sets a precedent that may trigger a domino effect worldwide.
The use of wood in construction has also gained popularity in other parts of the world. In Singapore, a university campus building was entirely constructed using sustainable materials. In Norway, a skyscraper twice the size of the Christ the Redeemer statue was erected using the same concept.
In the United States, as of 2022, more than 1,300 wooden buildings were under construction or already completed, including the country's tallest wooden skyscraper with 25 stories in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In Brazil, NOAH stands out as one of the pioneers in this area, having launched the country's first development built with engineered wood. Furthermore, the company has opened the doors of its current office to the REsource editorial team. You can check out the interview and explore their innovative space here.
The "Stockholm Wood City" and other similar projects represent a significant leap in sustainable urban development, demonstrating the potential of using wood as a raw material for the cities of the tomorrow.
