Tacito Cury is a survivor. Before emerging unharmed from major tragedies, he had already learned how to reinvent his own reality and bring it closer to his dreams. On the NXT Podcast, in a conversation with Giancarlo Nicastro, he shares how September 11, the Thailand tsunami, and the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral gave him a new perspective on life.
On the streets of São Paulo’s outskirts, he mapped out a plan to become an actor. Still very young, while selling newspapers on the street, he began investing in learning English and building a career outside Brazil.
When the planes struck the Twin Towers and the world stopped to follow the unfolding terrorist attacks, Cury, who was inside the World Trade Center, felt the impact of the tragedy on his own life. The next day, he learned that he had had direct contact with one of the terrorists shortly before the planes hit the buildings. “I taught one of the terrorists. [...] Imagine opening the newspaper, seeing a terrorist, and saying, ‘I know him,’” he recalled.
Amid fear and uncertainty, he learned how to start over. He lost his job shortly after the attacks and saw entrepreneurship as an opportunity to rebuild his path, opening a school in New Jersey. His trip to Thailand in 2004 was meant to be a gift to himself, but what seemed like the realization of another dream was overtaken by yet another catastrophe.
Cury arrived in the country on the day the tsunami struck and recalls that, in the midst of the unimaginable, he decided to volunteer with the Red Cross. The experience would later steer him toward diplomacy, allowing him to bring what he had learned into his personal projects.
Tacito revealed that these experiences led him to search for his own sense of meaning and a personal mission to fulfill. Trauma does not define his entire story, but each choice became part of taking on a role in the world and moving forward into new projects.
