Housing creation project to revitalise Rio city centre livens up the construction sector

01/29/2021 At Rua do Ouvidor, the red sign "for rent" attached to the old iron door - locked with chains and surrounded by wired concertina, shows the effects of the decay that a package of urban changes and tax of the city hall intends to revert. On the road, considered in the past to be the city centre of Rio, stores and closed commercial buildings replicate the impact that the pandemic and successive crises have spread throughout the surroundings, in the city's heart. As O GLOBO said last Tuesday, the Municipal Secretariat's measures for Urban Planning aim to change these directions by stimulating the production of housing in the region. Although the Reviver Centro project has yet to be approved by the City Council, it has already served as a boost to the market to make this idea a reality.
The Centre and property owners can no longer bear to stay in the current situation for four more years, with empty buildings being depreciated. For this reason, we think it is a discussion that is not only fundamental but urgent - says Claudio Hermolin, vice president of the Civil Construction Industry Union in the State of Rio (Sinduscon-Rio). - The basic principle for a region to have the potential for appreciation for the market is the location. The Center is unique, with all transport links, a regional airport and close to high traffic routes. There is a lack of incentives and flexibility in legislation to make the possibility of old, poorly used and even abandoned properties to become effective in developments that create life, occupation and income in the region.
